Sandra M. Stevenson is an award-winning writer, visual editor, and curator who currently serves as the Managing Editor of Visuals and Immersive Experiences at EducationWeek, a nonprofit newsroom focused on K–12 education. In this role, she leads the photography, video, and design teams through a digital transformation while shaping a monthly magazine. Before joining EducationWeek, she was the Deputy Director of Photography at The Washington Post, where she led a team of picture editors who worked across International, Climate, and Health & Science coverage.

Prior to her role at The Post, Sandra was an Associate Deputy Director of Photography at CNN, managing picture editors who curated the homepage, edited stories and newsletters, and produced special visual projects. Earlier at CNN, she served as an Assistant Editor overseeing digital photo editors on the news desk and contributed to visual content for Race/Related and Gender coverage, as well as exclusive projects including Overlooked and This Is 18.

Sandra began her career after earning a BA in English from Syracuse University, spending four years at NBC—first as a Page and later working across several news programs. She then became the program coordinator for the Black Filmmaker Foundation, where she was dedicated to supporting filmmakers of color in gaining access to opportunities across the industry.

She later returned to journalism by joining The Associated Press, spending eight years rising from photo assistant to overseeing photo news coverage for Latin America and the Caribbean. During that time, she also completed an advanced degree in multimedia from l’Université Toulouse in France.

Sandra is a contributing writer to the book Unseen: Unpublished Black History from The New York Times Photo Archives, and she served as picture editor and co-curator of the book This Is 18.
